| My dad's been wanting to hike the Eagle Peak trail out of Longmire for a while now, so off we went on Saturday morning. It was snowing lightly in Longmire and the lower stretch of trail was easy to follow on consolidated snow. After the first few switchbacks, we caught up to a nice fellow just about where the trail became less obvious. The three of us stuck together and tried to follow the trail based on the GPS, cutting out a couple switchbacks here and there. The further we went, the deeper the powder became, and soon we were up to our knees in powder and the snowshoes weren't helping much. We all took turns breaking trail, as it was pretty tough being the guy in front. After three hours, we broke out of the timber in the meadow just below 5400 feet in elevation. With the deep powder and low visibility, we all agreed there wasn't much point in continuing. It took an hour to get back to the road.
